avatar"Gary Bode has just completed our tax returns for the first time and I am totally satisfied with his level of service. He has been very attentive, asked all the right questions, and not only fixed some problems from our previous accountant, but also set us up for future success through a thorough and professional analysis of our corporate structure in conjunction with several personal variables.

I have worked with quite a few CPA’s in my life, and Gary has proven himself to be one of the most thoughtful, insightful, and pleasant fellows I have ever worked with."—J. Louis Tabor

Wilmington Accountant and CPA discusses the NSA Survey of Tax Preparation Fees

Wilmington NC CPA and tax accountant discusses tax preparation fee survey by the NSA

Gary Bode, CPA: we understand cost is always an issue. If you'd like a free initial consult, please call 399-2705.

The National Society of Accountants performs a biennial survey of tax preparation fees, which is widely reported on the Net.  A reported 8,000 tax preparers responded, about 25% of them CPAs.  Larger firms charged more than smaller firms.  Multiple ways to calculate tax preparation fees were included – strictly by time, strictly by form, etc. Return complexity and client preparedness were cited as exacerbating factors.  Fees increased only $3-4 over the last few years.

For a simple Form 1040, with itemized Federal deductions and a single State return:

 • South Atlantic (DE, DC, FL, GA, MD, NC, SC, VA, WV) – $243

Other types of taxes had fees listed on a national average with no regional breakdown given.  These probably include a single State related return, although this wasn’t explicitly stated.

  • $551 for Form 1065 (partnership)
  • $692 for Form 1120 (corporation)
  • $665 for Form 1120S (S corporation)
  • $415 for Form 1041 (fiduciary)
  • $2,044 for Form 706 (estates)
  • $584 for Form 990 (tax exempt)
  • $58 for Form 940 (Federal unemployment)

We’re a Wilmington accounting and CPA firm that offers tax preparation for all the above listed tax forms, and more.  A consult is always included to see where the myriad of new tax regulations affect you and/or your company.  Simultaneously, we look towards your future and offer tax positioning tips.  And of course, on new clients, we review last year’s returns for free to see if something was missed. After all, tax returns can be amended. If you’d like a free initial consult, please call us at (910) 399-2705.  Read any of our posts to gauge our expertise, proactive attitude and commitment to customer service.  An ongoing relationship is our goal.  So although cost is always an issue, sometimes other issues factor in, too.  BTW our fees seem well within the survey’s findings!

About.com stated the national chain fees, like Jackson Hewitt and H&R Block, were similar (for Form 1040 tax preparation). But on simple Form 1040, like the chains usually prepare, we feel self preparation with tax software IE TurboTax is cheaper than the chains, with a generally analogous level of expertise.  In both cases you’re relying on the tax preparation software and not the preparer per se.  CPA Wilmington NC.
