Client Testimonials

I have been using TurboTax for years but encountered an investment situation that TurboTax is not designed to handle. After searching the web for local CPAs/Accountants and chatting with a couple on the phone I was unable to find someone locally with sufficient experience in my particular situation with whom I felt comfortable. Deciding to broaden my search beyond my local area I discovered Gary's website and a detailed discussion with options pertinent to my situation. During a brief phone conversation, Gary answered all of my questions, explained how we would exchange information online and gave me an estimate for preparing my current tax return and an amended return. It was a pleasure working with Gary. He delivered everything he promised with no surprises.

back tax CPA accountant discusses IRS tax transcripts

CPA accountants routinely pull IRS tax transcripts. Taxpayers can access the same IRS tools. (910) 399-2705.

As a CPA accountant I pull IRS information on clients when amending tax returns, working a back tax case etc. But any taxpayer can access the same IRS tools. Providing copies is a fact of life for the IRS. Here are some tips on how to do that.

How do I get a copy of my tax return from the IRS?

The IRS can send you an exact copy of the tax return you filed. But it costs $57 per year. And it takes up to 60 days. The good news? They offer free services to provide the same information in less time. Per the IRS:

Complete Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return, and mail it to the IRS address listed on the form for your area. Copies are generally available for the current year and past six years. Please allow 60 days for delivery.

If you live in a Presidentially declared disaster area, the IRS may waive the fee to obtain copies of your tax returns. Visit IRS.gov and select the ‘Disaster Relief’ link in the lower left corner of the page for more about IRS disaster assistance.

Tax Return Transcripts

A transcript of your tax return is free. You can go back three years. An IRS tax transcript provides essentially all the information your original return does. But it’s in a different format. Most lenders ask for copies of tax returns. But you can talk to them and explain the transcript should be sufficient.

Tax Account Transcripts

A normal tax return transcript doesn’t show any changes to return after it was filed. But a tax account transcript does. So to get a complete picture of the current IRS status, for a given tax year, order both transcripts.

Per the IRS:

To request a 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ tax return transcript by mail or fax, complete Form 4506T-EZ, Short Form Request for Individual Tax Return Transcript. Estimated delivery: 5-10 days.

Businesses and individuals who need a tax account transcript should use Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return. Estimated Delivery: 30 days

IRS Tax Forms:

Form 4506, Form 4506T-EZ and Form 4506T are available online at IRS.gov.
