Client Testimonials

I have been using TurboTax for years but encountered an investment situation that TurboTax is not designed to handle. After searching the web for local CPAs/Accountants and chatting with a couple on the phone I was unable to find someone locally with sufficient experience in my particular situation with whom I felt comfortable. Deciding to broaden my search beyond my local area I discovered Gary's website and a detailed discussion with options pertinent to my situation. During a brief phone conversation, Gary answered all of my questions, explained how we would exchange information online and gave me an estimate for preparing my current tax return and an amended return. It was a pleasure working with Gary. He delivered everything he promised with no surprises.

Amended tax return CPA offers Form 1040X tips not in the Form 1040X instructions

IRS Form 1040X CPA discusses amended tax returns and the 1040X instructions.

I’ve tried to present a better overview of amending your tax return than the Form 1040X instructions provide. Need a free consult on amending your tax return? (910) 399-2705.

Form 1040x CPAs don’t generally read the IRS Form 1040X instructions. Why? The 1040X instructions discuss how to present the changes from your original return, not the tax issues you’re amending,  per se. The 1040X mechanics are the simplest part of amending your tax return. I think the Form 1040X instructions are straight forward. But there’s more to an amended tax return than just IRS Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. I’ve learned a few tricks over the years and have some suggestions. Hopefully this post provides a better overview of the amended tax return process than the limited scope presented in the Form 1040X instructions.

Do I need a Form 1040X CPA to amend my tax return?

Maybe not. But here are some issues to consider:

  • Do you understand the underlying tax changes on the amended tax return?
  • Might there be other tax issues in the amended tax return you’re concerned about?
  • Do have issues in other tax years?
  • Is the additional tax due, or the refund generated, by the amended tax return big enough to worry about?
  • Are the changes dramatic enough to raise IRS scrutiny?
  • Might there be something the IRS might construe as fraudulent in the original Form 1040.
  • What’s your stress level with amended the tax return?

Will my 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, automatically raise IRS red flags?

Maybe, it depends. Some of the amended tax return tips below may help prevent red flags. Many Form 1040X(s) are routine. When the amended return shows changes matching the IRS records, e.g. an unreported W-2, I doubt they take much further interest. My perception is the IRS can easily find millions of tax errors through their automated systems. But they don’t seem to have enough resources to audit them all.

Don’t send a hand written Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return

My understanding is that Form 1040x is hand processed. Nothing says I don’t care about my tax return more than submitting a ratty looking 1040X.  Most tax software can amend prior tax returns. The IRS has a Form 1040X online you can fill out and print.

Make sure Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, is accurate

Amended tax returns fix some prior error. So accuracy the second time around makes sense.

Can I amend an earlier Form 1040X?

Sure.

How long do I have to submit 1040X to claim a refund?

Usually three years. But you can use an amended tax return to reduce the unpaid tax on returns beyond three years.

Esplain to me Lucee

IRS Form 1040X requires an explanation for the changes. I think a 1040X CPA carefully crafts these explanations carefully, hopefully to remove any concern the IRS Agent may have.  And I’m not only Form 1040X CPA that includes supplemental documentation with amended tax returns. Try to imagine what the IRS agent might want to see to put your Form 1040X to put into the “good” pile.

Do you even need to prepare Form 1040X?

The most common amended tax return scenario starts with an IRS Notice CP 2000. In some cases, like say cancelled debt, you can bypass 1040X and just submit what the IRS asks for.

The IRS isn’t always right

But they’re generally accurate using what they have in their records. But they might not have all pertinent information, like legitimate deductions and tax credits
